The wave of the new SUVs splashed the 2018 Los Angeles Show. Lincoln used the show to present the all-new 2020 Lincoln Aviator. The new model is the brand’s replacement for the MKT model and takes the position between the larger Navigator and smaller Nautilus in the brand’s lineup. With this launch, Lincoln has the three-row, mid-size SUV to go against the market giants like the BMW X5, Audi Q7, Volvo XC-90 and Mercedes GLE.

Lincoln’s new Explorer-based SUV offers the six and seven-seat configurations and plenty of the high-end luxury features. The model also gets an attention with the sleek exterior style and the brand’s latest tech and safety equipment. The Aviator gets the propulsion from the twin-turbo V-6 engine and the new plug-in hybrid powertrain is also available making the model the most powerful Lincoln ever.

The all-new, three-row 2020 Lincoln Aviator shares the same architecture with the upcoming, sixth-generation Explorer. This is actually the second generation of the nameplate while the model effectively replaces the MKT SUV. From the visual perspective, the Aviator uses the styling cues from the larger Navigator SUV and Continental sedan. The look of the model isn’t also the surprise because we saw the Lincoln Prototype model at the 2018 Beijing Auto Show.

The large Continental-sedan-like grille and angular headlights define the front-end style in combination with the nice front bomber. The chiseled lines on the hood and sharp charter line mixed with the smooth surfaces form the elegant and attractive look. The sloping roofline and full-width LEDs on tailgate add also to the visual impression.

The premium exterior look comes in hand with the high-class interior design and top-notch tech features. The new Aviator lifted the luxury to the new heights.

The luxury SUV promises the high comfort for the passengers in all three rows and the room for their cargo. The rich textures and details leave also the strong impression while the high-tech features make the ride easier and funnier.

Lincoln offers its new, stunning SUV in the base, Reserve and Black Label trims. There the model will include the leather upholstery, aluminum and wood textures. The model will also offer the 30-way power adjustable front seats and highly configurable middle row. The equipment list will also include the large head-up display, Revel audio systems, 28-speaker Ultima 3D surround system, wireless charging, etc. The handy Lincoln Way app will also provide stop and start functions via the cellphone.

The Aviator will also rely on the Co-Pilot 360 Plus package of the advanced safety systems. The model will come with the sophisticated adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition, Stop and Go function bundled in the Traffic Jam Assist system. The safety aspect will also include Active Park Assist, Reverse Brake Assist and Evasive Braking Assist.

The premium style and feel will also be backed up with the high-performance powertrains. The 2020 Lincoln Aviator will employ the 3.0-liter bi-turbo V-6 in two configurations, 10-speed automatic transmission, sophisticated suspension and systems to provide the high-class and high-performance ride.

A 3.0-liter V-6 with the twin turbocharges will provide the “base” performance of 400 hp and 450 pound-feet of torque. The Grand Touring version will use the same engine in the combination with the battery-powered electric motor. The motor provides instant torque and the combined output with the V-6 engine of 450 hp and 600 lb-ft. The system includes also the 10-speed automatic transmission with the electric motor placed in transmissions housing while the battery takes the place under the floor below the passengers’ area.

The ride comfort will also be the strong side of this premium model and Lincoln uses the adaptive air suspension with the camera system monitoring the road ahead and adjusting the settings in the real time. The multiple driving modes will also tailor the ride to the conditions. The base model will switch between the Normal, Conserve, Excite, Slippery, and off-road Deep Conditions mode. The plug-in hybrid version will add the Pure EV and Preserve EV modes with one prioritizing the performance while another efficiency.

Acura’s best-selling model RDX entered the third generation as the 2019 version and the model arrived with more style, turbocharged power, torque vectoring all-wheel drive, high-class interior and much more. The new generation RDX sports the new exterior design and better performance and in the fast-growing segment, it was on the sales chart in front of the names such as the BMW X3, Audi Q3. Mercedes GLC, etc., at some periods.

So, after the comprehensive redesign, we shouldn’t expect much to change with the arrival of the next 2020 Acura RDX version. The model will bring new color options and probably more standard features.

The RDX ditched the V-6 engine in favor of the Civic Type R-based turbo unit for the recent redesign. The 2020 Acura RDX will return with the willing 2.0-liter turbo-4 with 272 hp and 280 pound-feet of torque at disposal. The model will offer the all-wheel drive which can transfer up to 70 percent of the torque to the rear wheels. Honda has recently revived the Passport nameplate and the model takes the form of the two-row crossover SUV with the “soft off-road” capability and plenty of interior space. The Passport model fills the gap between the compact CR-V and mid-size Pilot in the brand’s formidable crossover SUV range. The model shares plenty of style, interior features and mechanics with the Pilot SUV and the production takes place at the factory in Lincoln, Alabama where the three-row Pilot is being assembled as well.

Honda will offer the 2020 Honda Passport with the single engine option like the mid-size Pilot and the range of trims will also be familiar. The two-row Passport will go on sale in four trims including Sport, EX-L, Touring ould and Elite. The model will provide the same towing capability as the larger Pilot while will be more capable for the off-road adventures. There will also be the latest tech and safety systems and several premium features.

The 2020 Honda Passport shares the platform with the Pilot SUV and Ridgeline pickup and the model uses also the similar mechanic elements.

The Passport is, however, sized for the transportation of up to five people and provides plenty of cargo thanks to the clever interior design. The model measures 190,5 inches from bumper to bumper while rides on the 111-inch wheelbase. The wheelbase is identical to that of the larger Pilot but the Passport is 6 inches shorter while has a 10-inch longer footprint than the compact CR-V.

Form the visual perspective, the model looks like the shrunken Pilot with the similar shape and styling elements. The shape of the grille and the headlights are similar to the latest vehicles from Honda. The Passport has also nice creases on the hood and dynamic character line on the side panels.

The model improves also the off-road capability with the lifted ride height and taller wheel arches than the larger Pilot. The Passport has the ride height of 8.4 inches and boasts also the better approach and departure angles than the larger cousin. The approach angle is 21,4 degrees and departure 27, 6 inches.

Inside the cabin, the Passport uses the design familiar from the larger Pilot and offer a similar equipment range. The same wheelbase as the three-row Pilot provides, however, competitive passenger and cargo space.  With the all five seats in function, the model provides 41,2 cubes of the cargo room while with no passengers in the rear row the capacity shrinks to 100 cubes. The model has also a number of storage compartments and plenty of the legroom in both rows.

As for the available equipment, the base model starts with the cloth upholstery, LED headlights, keyless ignition, etc. The standard equipment includes also the 7-inch TFT instrument cluster display, a 5-inch center screen, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, etc. The EX-L adds an 8-inch touchscreen with the smartphone support, leather upholstery, power tailgate, heated front seats, etc. The Touring improves with the heated rear seats, wi-fi hotspot, parking sensors, etc. The range-topping version has the cooled seats, heated steering wheel, unique trim accents and more.

Honda makes also the Passport safer with the standard systems like the adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, active lane control and lane departure warning. The blind-spot monitoring becomes the standard equipment in the EX-L and upper grades.

The 2020 Honda Passport adopts the Pilot-based underpinning and the same engine as well. A 3.5-liter V-6 makes 280 hp and torque of 262 pound-feet. The 9-speed automatic transmission sends the power to the front wheel by default. The available four-wheel drive and improved ride height compared to the three-row Pilot and combined with the shorter overhangs boost the off-road capability over the Pilot’s but the Passport remains the soft off-roader.

The Passport will also provide the good towing capability. The same platform and mechanics mean the same towing ratings as the Pilot SUV. The front-wheel-drive Passport allows up to 3, 500 pounds of towing. With the power on all wheels, the model can tow up to 5, 000 pounds.

2020 Genesis GV80: News, Design, Release

Hyundai’s upmarket division Genesis has had the focus on the
sedan models so far but with the SUV sells booming the brand is now changing
the course in that direction. The Genesis GV80 Concept presented at the 2017
New York Auto Show hinted the arrival of the first SUV model from the brand and
the upcoming mid-size GV80 was spotted in the form which seems production
ready. The model should hit the market as the 2020 Genesis GV80 and go against
the established names in the industry like the BMW X5, Audi Q7, Mercedes GLE,
etc. The reports indicate also that Genesis has another smaller GV70 SUV in the
plan to compete in the segment with the BMW X3.

The brand’s new model should borrow sharp styling cues from the mentioned concept model while inside the cockpit we should expect a similar design as in the brand’s sedans.  The engine range should also mimic the powertrain options in the sedan lineup with the possible introduction of the new V-6 unit.

The 2020 Genesis GV80 is still the unsolved mystery as
Geneses hides details about the model while we can draw some cues from the
prototype version.

First of all, it’s not known yet what platform the new
Genesis SUV will use. Judging by the spy photos the model is likely based on
the rear-wheel-drive architecture of the G80 sedan. Some sources suggest also
the stretched Santa Fe’s platform or the unit from the new Palisade model. Still,
the first scenario seems like the most probable.

On the other hand, the styling of the model seems to have
inhered the sharp design cues from the Concept version. The mesh grille seems
to have the similar design as on the GV80 Concept but slightly redefined
proportions. The horizontal oriented headlights follow also the pattern form
the concept car but with the enlarged dimensions and more conventional design.

Interior, equipment:

Inside the cabin, the mid-size Genesis SUV should use
similar design cues as the brand’s newest sedans. Still, the model will get a
unique steering wheel and reports claim also the new controllers for the
model. 

The GV80 will, of course, employ the high-quality materials combined with contrasting surfaces and trim details. The latest tech will be used and advanced safety systems like adaptive cruise control, emergency braking, pedestrian detection, blind spot monitors, etc.

As for the engine options, the new 3.6-liter V-6 could be in
the progress and arrive with the 2020 Genesis GV80. The model will offer both
rear-drive and four-wheel drive option and automatic transmission.

A 3.3-liter turbocharged V-6 engine used in the G80 should
also be the option. This engine makes 365 hp and torque of 376 lb-ft in the
sedan model. Other options from the sedan a 3.8-liter V6 and potent 420 hp
5.0-liter V-8 could also be the part of the deal. The plug-in hybrid version
should appear at some point.

The model will also get the newest tech features Chevy has on offer. The new infotainment system with the smartphone support and new center display will appear alongside the modern safety systems. The large SUV will rely on the systems like the adaptive cruise control, lane control, automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, etc.

As for the engine choices, we should expect the 2020 Chevy Tahoe with the duo of familiar V-8 engines.

A 5.3-liter V-8 engine should appear with the improved fuel saving system and the new 8-speed automatic transmission. The power and torque ratings should stay around 355 hp and 383 lb-ft.

A 6.3-liter V-8 should be a more potent V-8 option in the combination with the new 10-speed automatic transmission.  The power with this engine should move to around 420 hp and torque to 460 lb-ft.

However, the next-generation Tahoe could also gain the diesel engine option. Again, related with the light-duty Silverado a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 would produce around 282 hp and torque of 450 lb-ft.

The new Tahoe will also switch to the rear independent suspension and will also provide the off-road upgrades.

2020 Kia Soul: Design, Specs, Options, Release

Kia used the 2018 Los Angeles Show to pull the wraps off the all-new Soul model. The redesigned compact hatchback starts the third generation as the 2020 Kia Soul. Kia still hides some specs like the mileage but revealed also some of the most important facts about the new Soul.

The new version ditches some trim options but will still offer the six levels of customization. The model again comes in EV version but remains with the front-wheel drive only. The better performance and handling will also arrive with the new-gen Soul but Kia improved also the passenger and cargo space. The model won’t also lack the modern tech and safety features and will also get attention with the distinctive and boxy style.

The new 2020 Kia Soul made the transition to the third generation on the new strengthened platform and with the redefined dimensions. The new Soul has 165.2 inches from bumper to bumper which is 2.5 inches more than on the previous generation. With the longer body goes also the 1.2-inch longer wheelbase which opens more interior comfort and cargo space.

From the visual perspective, the new Soul remains similarly shaped and instantly recognizable. However, the new styling elements and several tricks make it more appealing to the eye. The model sports the new, slim headlights and upper grille while also comes with the redesigned front bumper area. The front bumper has a bit of the sports flair while the EV version has fewer openings in that area and also comes on the unique five-spoke wheels.

The roof also adds to the appearance with the floating style and the rear has also the new, tall taillights design.

Inside the cabin, the new Soul boosts the cargo space for addition 5 cubes which now measures 23.8 cubic feet with the all seats up. The model keeps other interior dimensions largely unchanged.

The redesigned hatch also has the nice dash design with the center screen sized up to 10.25 inches and with Apple Car Play and Android Auto features. Kia will also offer the features like the wireless charging, automatic climate, 640 Wats sound system with 10 speakers, etc. The model will also provide the full set of the active safety systems. Watching and preventing collisions will be automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, lane keep control, adaptive cruise control, parking sensors and blind spot monitoring.

The all-new Soul will arrive in six trim levels. Kia promised LX, S, X-Line, GT-Line, EX, and EX Designer Collection options including also the EV variant. Full specs of the trims will appear closer to the market launch.

On the performance front, the new 2020 Kia Soul promises better driving characteristics thanks to the new, more rigid platform and improved suspension system. The model now relies on the fully independent rear suspension.

The propulsion for the non-electric version will provide inline-4 and turbocharged four-cylinder engines. The base power unit is a 2.0-liter inline-4 with the power and torque ratings at 147 hp and 132 pound-feet. This engine Kia will offer either 6-speed manual transmission or CVT. The turbo version also returns with the new-gen Soul. A 1.6-liter turbo-4 unit boosts the performance to 201 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. The GT-Line version will combine this engine with the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. No all-wheel drive for the redesigned Soul as some reports claimed earlier.

The electric Soul version comes with the 64-kWh lithium-ion battery pack which provides also the power for the Hyundai Kona EV and Kia Niro EV. The battery feeds the electric motor mounted on the front axle. The system makes 201 hp and torque of 291 pound-feet.

Kia says that battery needs 75 minutes for the 80 percent recharge with the fast-charging unit. The range of 100 miles should take 30 minutes of recharging. Kia hasn’t, however, revealed the mileage of the new EV version. The same battery provides 239 miles in the Niro EV.

The new 2020 Kia Soul will have the market launch in the middle of the next year. Kia will likely keep the full specs and equipment list in the dark until the market debut. The price will also appear closer to the on-sale date. The current version starts from $14, 490.

2020 GMC Acadia: Mid-update, News, Release

The mid-size GMC Acadia provides the great ride quality and interior refinement and the model also offers a punchy V-6 engine option. The model arrived as the scaled down version and significantly lighter for the new generation in 2017 and the model is now nearing to the mid-cycle update. The prototype version of the refreshed 2020 GMC Acadia has already been on the roads testing and the new version will hit the market in 2019.

The updated Acadia will bring the styling in the line with the brand’s recent models and small adjustments should also appear inside the cabin. The revised tech and safety equipment will also be the part of the mid-update. GMC will also update the mechanics with the possible introduction the new transmission system while there are no signs suggesting the new turbocharged or diesel engine option.

For the new model year and the mid-cycle update, the 2020 GMC Acadia will bring its styling in line with the recently refreshed or redesigned models in the brand’s lineup.

The prototype version has the disguised front and rear end sections and most of the changes will take place there. The model will get the refreshed front fascia with the new versions of brand’s signature grille accompanied with the new headlights. Expect both to adopt the similar design theme as on the recently redesigned Terrain and Sierra models.

The rear will also get the new treatment of the taillights and slightly reshaped rear bumper. The C-shaped motif will appear on the taillights.

The interior of the refreshed Acadia will also receive several modifications but there won’t be any radical moves. The model will keep the current dashboard design and update some tech and safety features.

The SUV will also stay in the same dimensions of offer the seats for up to seven passengers. The available cargo space will be up to 79 cubic feet with only the front row in function. With all seats up, the cargo volume will be just 12.8 cubes.

The model will also offer different material options and high comfort features with the high-luxury Denali version at the top of the range. GMC should also expand the availability of some advanced safety systems to the lower grades.

As for the changes in the powertrain range, the 2020 GMC Acadia will likely continue with the familiar engine options. Some sources suggested the introduction of the new turbocharged engine and even diesel option but no signs from the company about that possibility. However, a more probable upgrade is the new 9-speed automatic transmission which should provide some performance and efficiency upgrades.

The base engine will more than likely remain a 2.5-liter four-cylinder unit with the current power delivery of 193 hp and torque of 188 pound-feet. The better performance will provide a 3.6-liter V-6 with the power around 310 hp and torque of 271 lb-ft.

The Wranglers in the US will have a 3.0-liter V-6 turbo diesel under the hood and in the combination with the automatic transmission only. Expect the power around 260 hp while torque sets around 440 pound-feet. The Euro-spec Wrangler will, however, get the four-cylinder turbodiesel. A 2.2 -liter four-cylinder oil-burner is the unit from the Jeep Cherokee and will make 197 hp and torque of 332 lb-ft. It will also come with the 8-speed automatic gearbox exclusively.

The 2019 Jeep Wrangler Diesel will hit the market late this year. The base Wranglers will again start around $28, 000 while the versions with the diesel mill will add several thousand to the price. Jeep hasn’t revealed the price and specs of the diesel variant yet.

The seven-passenger, full-size Audi Q7 SUV approached the mid-update after the redesigned model arrived for the 2017 model year. The family hauler was spotted several times and we can detect the changes on model’s front and rear fascias.

Audi will also boost the connectivity and safety tech of the sleek and comfortable SUV while major design upgrades are not expected inside the cabin. The 2020 Audi Q7 will also improve the power and efficiency as the reports claim while will likely keep the same range of the advanced powertrains and no diesel in the States of course.

The second-generation, MLB-platform-based, multi-material Audi Q7 is the sleek and attractive SUV but with the modifications on the front and rear-end sections, the 2020 Audi Q7 will adopt some styling cues of the newer Audi models.

Based on the spy photos, Audi hasn’t changed the design of the model’s profile and the sleek body panels combined with the defined character line which stretches around the tailgate will continue in the same form.

The front-end section is, however, where the transformation begins. The new headlights design uses the styling cues from the Audi A6 while the grille version on the prototype seems a bit smaller than on the current model.

Audi seems also that made some changes in the lower bumper area but they don’t look so obvious. The same is with the rear side which has almost identical taillights as the current version.

Interior, equipment:

Indie the cabin, Audi will surely upgrade connectivity and tech features plus add fresh material and texture options. However, there is no proof that the model will adopt the dash design as on the new Q8 despite it could be the case.

The model will also upgrade with the latest crash-avoidance systems. It will be well equipped from the base variant and provide great interior and ride comfort. The different high-quality material options will be mixed with the attractive trim pieces and premium comfort features. Audi will also add the new steering wheel.

2020 Audi Q7: Powertrains

Audi will likely improve the power and efficiency ratings of the 2020 Audi Q7 but no exact details about the powertrain upgrades.

What is sure the diesel-powered version won’t appear in the US while on the Old Continent the 3.0-liter TDI will be in the offer in several output options as well as the potent V-8 diesel in the SQ7.

Expect the US version with the turbo-4 and V-6 turbo options but with the improved performance and efficiency. The current 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine provides 252 hp and torque of 273 pound-feet. The 3.0-liter V-6 supercharged engine boosts the performance with available 333 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque.

2021 BMW X3 eDrive: News, Expectations, Release

The handsome and responsive-to-drive, mid-size, BMW X3 entered the third generation in late 2017 but BMW also defined the next step for this model. The electrification is among the priorities for the brands and BMW is working on the electric-powered X3 version. The new version of the popular X3 was previewed by the iX3 concept at the 2018 Beijing Motor Show and the launch date is expected sometime in 2020. The electric X3 will likely arrive as the part 2021 model year and unlike some expected to be marketed as the 2021 BMW X3 eDrive the model will go to the production under the i sub-brand and use the iX3 nomenclature.

The prototype of the future electric iX3 is already performing the out-door testing and it looks almost identical to the newest version of the conventionally-powered X3. The models will also share the most of the in-car technologies and interior design. The model will be sold globally and the production will take the place in China.

The 2021 BMW iX3 will use the new-generation eDrive platform that actually debuted on its Concept version but won’t go on sale as the 2021 BMW X3 eDrive as some expected. This platform will also be the base of many future vehicles from the brand and BMW is also working on the new-generation solid batteries for the electric models. However, these batteries won’t be here in time for this model but we should expect very good driving range despite that.

On the other hand, the styling of the model won’t be the large departure from the conventional version form. The prototype version spotted recently is almost identical to the current X3 and just a few details make the difference. The model has a conventional kidney grille but for the production version, we should expect enclosed variant like on the Concept vehicle.

BMW will also use slightly different bumpers and what will also define this model are the side charging port and the model will also lack the exhaust tips.

Interior, Equipment:

Inside, the iX3 will also use the same layout as the recently all-new, conventionally-powered X3 but BMW will add a few unique details.

The model will come with the high-end materials and in-car technologies. It will use the new-design instrument panel and the latest connectivity tech. BMW is also working on the self-driving technologies and in the time of coming this model will also integrate the achievements in that area.

As for the powertrain of the 2021 BMW X3 eDrive, it is too early to have precise details but the model won’t depart far from what BMW presented on the concept model.

The model will integrate the fifth-generation eDrive system but remains to see what performance it will be capable of. The newest eDrive version has separate components as will use the high-capacity batteries. BMW promise, its new-gen solid-state batteries would do more than 400 miles per charge but the iX3 should hit the roads before the arrival of these batteries.  The mileage would likely be in 200-range.

The Concept version had a 270-horsepower electric motor in the combination with the 70-kWh battery. BMW claimed the range of this setup to 250 miles and fast charging to 80 percent in about 30 minutes. The production version should be close to these numbers as well.
