The Bedtime Excuses

Does anybody else feel like they are about to lose their minds because their kids refuse to go to sleep at night without a complete breakdown...every night?

Honestly I am at my wit's end with it.  It has been at least a week that he has been doing it every night.  Previously it would happen maybe one night a week, if that.  Every night at bedtime it is a consistent fight.  We do our bedtime routine the same every night, we spend mommy and Z time for about an hour after K goes to bed, and we make it all the way up to I start to leave the room.

It starts with when I put him to bed.  As soon as I start to leave the room he all of a sudden starts arguing with me to stay.  When I say no, it is bedtime, he starts crying.  It isn't a quiet cry, it is a crying yell kind of cry.  He is a very loud cryer (by the way he is 5).

I have tried to soothe him to find out what is really wrong and I get nowhere.  He tells me he is having nightmares, but then he would tell me that when he hadn't even fallen asleep.  I explained that he is just thinking about things he doesn't like and he needs to change his thoughts. The first 3 or 4 nights I would do this with him and tell him happy stories and try to change his train of thought.  And every night it took an hour after bedtime and he would have another excuse such as bathroom or hungry, or whatever he could think of.

This is when I realized that he is playing me.  Every night.  He just doesn't want to go to bed and since I stopped coddling him, he has gone into "I'm going to drive mommy crazy" mode.  He fights me about staying in his room.  I leave his door cracked at night so when he is screaming I close it so he doesn't wake his brother up, but then he just comes into the hallway scream-crying.  It has been a constant battle.

Tonight he chose to sleep in the den instead of his room because he refused to go to bed and stay in bed.  I don't even know what to do with that!

Any suggestions on how to deal with this without losing my mind or letting him stay up as long as he wants to?

Lucky, Lucky


I have always had a weird ability to find 4-leaf clovers.  I can spot them anywhere, and it is normally when I am just walking by a patch of clovers and happen to look down.  I see them and pick them.  I have always done this and have never met anybody else who can or does.  

Until now.  

My son has been obsessed with 4-leaf clovers ever since I found 4 of them by my mailbox.  He has been very upset about not being able to find any himself.  I have found some for him and pointed them out so he could pick them so that he felt like he found them.  

Until today...

Today he ran up to me with the biggest 4-leaf clover ever!  He was so excited he couldn't even contain himself!  I had barely turned to put it inside the house when he came running back with a 2nd one!  He was glowing.  


Tonight while he was cleaning up some sticks from the yard, he found a 3rd 4-leaf clover!  

I know it sounds weird, but I am stoked that he has 'the gift' too!  There are so many people who have never found ONE and I find them constantly. 


I love it, but I also know it is exciting and something that is just a wishful thought for most people.

Getting Out of Debt!!

My husband and I are so excited to start The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey.  This is NOT a sponsored post, but I love it so much that I think everybody, with any sort of debt, needs to do this plan.  There are affiliate links in this post for your convenience.  Here is the book in case you want to buy it.  I checked it out at the library and then bought the audio books for my husband because that way he just listens to them on the way to work.


It is really a very good book, and a good plan.  It is something that you read and think, "well duh!  That makes a ton of sense.  I wish we would have done this 10 years ago!"  But there is no time like now and that is where we are.

The first step in his plan is building a budget.  It is amazing how much money goes in and out of our accounts and we have no idea where it goes, or if there are things that we buy that we really can't afford.  It is really crazy when you sit down to do this if you have never done it.  I got another one of his books called Financial Peace and it gives a little more details on building a budget.

There is a Monthly Cash Flow sheet in the back of the books that you can use.  For me it was easier to alter it to fit our actual bills and put it in excel format.  Then Financial Peace says to build your monthly budget and then do a budget per pay period.  My husband gets paid every week so we have to build essentially 5 budgets every month!  And the budgets need to be Zero budgets where every cent has somewhere it is going.  There shouldn't be any money floating around without a home.

I will keep everybody posted on our financial progress.  We are so excited to get started even though we know it will be hard and there most definitely will be sacrifices (we are canceling our cable this week!), but if it was easy, everybody would be debt free.  The hardest part is getting used to the idea of not buying things you want or doing things that you want to do.  If it isn't in the budget, it just can't happen.  I know the first few months on a budget won't be perfect and it will be a trial and error phase until we get the ball really rolling, but just the idea of not dreading paying bills every week and living paycheck to paycheck is enough to make us want to give it all we have to make it work.  I hope you will at least check out the book, or you can listen to his radio show at www.daveramsey.com and click on the radio show on the left.

5 Ways I Lost 10 Pounds Painlessly


I have been looking for different ways to get healthier and eat better.  It wasn't really my goal to lose weight as much as to just get a little healthier and be a better example for my kids.

I have a friend who is taking part in a deal with coworkers to lose weight and get healthy.  she has been been doing awesome. She's eating right and working out. As a single woman it's a little easier for her with only one mouth to feed, no bedtimes to adhere to, and no picky eaters.  But she has been my inspiration, along with my sister. 

1.  First thing I did was cut out as much junk as I normally eat. I have a weakness for Turkey Hill peanut butter chocolate icecream. I can't resist buying it when it's on sale and then I can't resist eating it when it's at the house. So I resist buying it because it's easier to not have it at the house at all. I did this with a lot of unhealthy snacks. If I don't have it here I normally opt to eat a healthier snack. Cottage cheese and tomatoes are my new best friends!
