Superman Name Sign

I completed my next pallet sign and I love it!  I made it for a friend's son for his birthday.  He is a big superhero fan and she said his room is primary colors so I chose (and she encouraged) Superman.  It just so happens that she is also an Atlanta Braves fan and they are the same colors!

This sign I wanted to try out spray paint because that is what kind of paint that I had the right shade of blue in.  So I sprayed the whole board, both sides and waited patiently (kind of) for it to dry.

Once it was dry I decided it was too bright blue and after looking at some pictures of Superman decided it needed some shading.  I used acrylic blue and black paints to get the right color and added some shading to the sides and throughout.  In the light it has a shimmery look from the spray paint to look like Superman and the shading tones it down a little.

Easy Paper Birds

My 15 month old loves birds.  He loves watching them, hearing them, and looking at them in books. I have been having a hard time keeping him on his changing table for diaper changes and I am constantly fighting him so I had the idea to hang birds from his ceiling.

Now I just had to figure out how to make birds to hang from the ceiling without actually buying them or having to do origami (not my thing!).

Quiet Time Please!

I have fought tooth and nail and denied that my 4 year old is ready to quit naps.

I have lost this battle and have been trying to be able to adjust and help him adjust to staying in his room for quiet time instead of nap time.

We started out with 2 hours of quiet/ nap time when he was still falling asleep about 4 out of 7 days.  Once he stopped sleeping at all, I cut it to 1 hour.  I have had a really hard time getting him to stay in his room and quiet time has not been quiet or peaceful for either of us!

He has a clock in his room and I would tell him when the first number turns to a 2 he can come down.  He found every excuse to come out and even denied that he knew his numbers and said he didn't know if it was a 2.

It was very stressful for both of us and something had to give.  I need quiet time in the middle of the day to work on my homework so that the only time I have isn't after 9 pm when I am exhausted from the day.  He needs quiet time because he gets really grumpy if he doesn't have time to himself, just like me!

Pallet Wood Name and Bird Sign

I have acquired some wooden pallets and they have been just sitting in the back yard begging to be used for something.  I see different hand painted signs all over the place and figured I would try it out.  Those boards are not very easy to get off so my husband did most of that and I stole 2 boards while he wasn't looking!

First I hosed them off and sprayed them with a vinegar and water mixture to get any bugs that might have been on them off.  I set them out to dry in the sun for awhile. (sorry no pictures of this because I was too excited!)

Pencil Holder Craft

We have a bag of containers and different items that I have saved instead of throwing away.  You never know when you might be able to use them!

We had an empty frozen juice container and a friend's birthday coming up, so we decided to repurpose it into a pencil holder.

Supplies Needed:
Juice Container or similar
Construction paper
Markers
Glue
Tape
Scissors

What's Yours is Mine and What's Mine is Mine

This is the new voice of my 4 year old.  He all of a sudden feels that every toy in the house is his, no matter what.  He also feels that he doesn't have to share with his younger brother, even if it is the baby's toy.

This has been a very frustrating battle, especially as K gets older and wants to play with more of Z's things.  I have told Z that he can put any toys that he doesn't want K to play with in his room and it will be off limits to K.

This worked for about a week and then it was back to the toy battles.  We have started to take toys away that he yells at the baby for touching.  This helps at the time, but as soon as he forgets we took away his toys, he is back to not sharing.

He doesn't get in trouble if it is a toy he was playing with and the baby tries to take it and he asks us to help.  He only gets in trouble when he yells at or pushes the baby to get him to go away.

When he does these things we will take the toy away and then explain to him why it isn't nice to act that way and ask him what he should have done instead.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Is anybody else going through the 'what's yours is mine and what's mine is mine' stage with their kids?  How do you handle it?

He Chewed the Blinds?!

The title says it all...

My 4 year old chewed his blinds in his bedroom.  When asked about it he said he didn't know what happened.  I finally got him to tell me that he actually bit his blinds!  When I say bit, I mean chewed them in multiple places even breaking one!

He said that during 'quiet time' he was pretending to be a dog and the dog wanted to look out the window!

Preschooler Writing Practice

I bought this huge dry erase board about a month ago at a yard sale. I knew I would use it with Z to practice writing and drawing, but haven't touched it since I bought it.

Z has been getting really good at tracing and has been trying to write things on his own, so I figured it was time to start practicing.

As soon as I brought out the board and the markers he lit up, he loves this stuff!

What to be when I grow up?

Do you ever wonder what you are going to be when you grow up?  I know that I do, almost every day.

I am a full time student finishing my Bachelor's in Business Management in April 2014 and I don't know where I am going from there.  I really hate to admit that since I have worked so hard in school, but I just don't know.

I have been staying home with my son since he was about 18 months old and he is now 4 and going back into the workforce scares me.  It is the unknown.

It also means that somebody else will be taking care of my kids while I am at work, and that is scary also.

I have always envisioned myself as an elementary school teacher, but by the time I finally went back to school I couldn't actually go to school to take classes (which was required at the time for teaching) so I am enrolled in Business Management.

Homemade Bird Feeders

We searched on Pinterest for homemade bird feeders because it is an item on our Summer Fun List, AKA, Summer Bucket List.

Everything I found seemed to be the same basic recipe including gelatin and bird seed.  Most ideas used cookie cutters.

So here is what we did!

Ingredients:

1 pack of plain gelatin
1/4 cup water
1 cup of bird seed
Empty egg carton
Twine

July's Monthly Getting it Done Goal

I have been falling behind in my monthly goals that I started in January, the 12 Months of Getting it Done.  Things have been busy, but I need to get excited about my goals again and work on getting some things done.

July I am going to purge my house of all of the things I don't need, want, or have a place for.

I did this when we moved, and it is time again.  I find that behind all of the clutter and things that might get used occasionally are treasures that I would rather use.

At the end of the month I plan to have a yard sale and hopefully get rid of some of the things that just add to my organization frustration!

What is your July goal?

Go Green Roundup

I know it has been awhile since I have had a Green Room post and I apologize, but my sister is in the process of moving and she is the one who does the posts that go here!

I have decided to do a collection of posts about going green from different blogs that I read, so here it goes!  Hope you find something you can use, I know that I have.

Lightning Bug Hunt

One night after we noticed the lightening bugs were coming out, me and Z went on a lightning bug hunt. There is a corner of our yard that is a small strip of grass surrounded by trees. This is where our lightening bugs live!

We searched the whole yard before entering into their land. When we found it, they were everywhere.

Button Caterpillar

For some reason I have an obsession with making things out of egg cartons.  Today it was rainy out and we decide to do a craft.  The plan was for Z to do the craft while I assisted.  Well, he ended up running off so I ended up doing it by myself, but the kids can definitely do this!

Supplies Needed:

Buttons
Pipe Cleaners
Glue
Paperclip
Egg Carton

Paint Outside!

This weekend we decided to paint outside. I started with some paper taped down in the baby pool and squirted some paint on it.
