Homemade Bird Feeders

We searched on Pinterest for homemade bird feeders because it is an item on our Summer Fun List, AKA, Summer Bucket List.

Everything I found seemed to be the same basic recipe including gelatin and bird seed.  Most ideas used cookie cutters.

So here is what we did!

1 pack of plain gelatin
1/4 cup water
1 cup of bird seed
Empty egg carton

I always have egg cartons and tend to always resort to them for crafts so I figured they would make a good mold also!  I decided against the cookie cutters mainly because I only have Christmas ones and I wanted something different.

We combined the water and gelatin and heated it up until the gelatin disolved.  We removed it from the heat and let it cool for a few minutes then added the birdseed.  We mixed it up really well and filled about 6 egg cups halfway with the mixture.

I tied a knot in the end of a line of twine and pushed it into the half filled cups and filled it the rest of the way.  I did 2 with only one egg cup and then I figured I can make a bigger feeder if I tie a few knots in the twine spaced so that each knot can go into 1 egg cup.  I ended up with 2 bird feeders with 3 eggs and 2 with only 1 egg.

All in all I think they turned out pretty well and I am glad I didn't use the cookie cutters.
