Rice Sensory Bin

We decided to make a sensory bin because we had never had one before and I wanted to know what all the hype was about!  We also hadn't even dyed rice different colors so I figured it was about time!

First we dyed the rice.  We did 1 cup of rice to 1 Tbs of vinegar and added food coloring until we got the color we wanted.  Then we laid out the colored rice on wax paper to dry.  I mixed them up every once in awhile to make them dry evenly.  It took a few hours and they still held the vinegar smell so I left the lid off of the sensory bins until the smell went away.

It turned out to be a great activity for Z and a good learning experience. I mixed in rocks that we had found at the beach and Z spent forever sifting through the rice and searching for them.

We mixed colors, used measuring cups, he used a slotted spoon to catch the rocks, spoons and tools to sift through the rice, and a funnel (of course where his protective eye gear!) to see which rocks would get caught.  This activity kept him busy for a pretty long time and he had a blast.

    1. It was so easy and fun. I put it all in a bin with a lid and bring it out whenever boredom strikes! Thanks for stopping by.
